What does it mean to be resilient?

Discover how building your resilience can change your life for good…
How to become more resilient and build your self-confidence on the way!
Being able to face any situation? How does that sound? You never have to worry about the way things will turn out, because you know you’re prepared for this!
The benefits of being resilient are that you won’t be afraid of taking actions and of the results not being exactly as you want them to be… And you will still be very okay with this 🙂
Let’s get into this and discover how to become stronger than ever!
What does it mean to have resilience?
This is an essential question to start with!!
Having resilience means that no matter what will come your way, you will be able to “bounce back” from it.
You will definitely “take the best and leave the rest” out of this situation.
This term is used for different kinds of “things” coming your way such as a tragedy, a trauma to very stressful situations.
Actually, I want to add here that resilience is a skill to develop, but it’s true that you need a different amount of resilience depending if you’re facing a very hard situation in your life (a tragedy for example) to a very stressful situation at work… The same resiliency isn’t required and I’m not saying that’s easy at all! 🙂
But I can assure that you can good at it 🙂 better and better over time!!
Which is correct resilience or resiliency?
Both of them can be used as common nouns and they mean the same: it’s the ability to recover from a situation.
Resilience though is the one that is the most of the time being used, you would say “I have lots of resilience” or you can also use the adjective and say “I’m very resilient”.
What are the qualities of a resilient person?
A resilient person is someone that can face any situation and will get back on her feet pretty fast 🙂
So, this person has amazing qualities to do so such as: knowing and being able to control her emotional reactions, understanding other’s behaviors and not taking everything personally and also, they are positive towards every challenge and sees opportunities to learn and to grow from every situation.
I just want to add that these persons have a great ability to adapt themselves to any new situation and they aren’t afraid to take risks, because they know that no matter what, they will be okay!
Are you born with resilience?
Like self-confidence, having resilience is a skill that you can develop 🙂
So nobody is born being resilient, but everyone has the ability inside of us to be resilient 🙂
Just like self-confidence, it’s already inside of you and you “just” need to take it out!
I used to think that this person has a personality, a character that “has” resilience, but actually, these persons were just like you and me: they learned how to be resilient and since this day, they are better at it and can look like professional resilient people, when in fact, they were exactly where you are standing today: learning how to be resilient.
Why do you need resilience?
It’s super important to become more resilient in our lives.
As I always say, life is full of ups and downs and of course, it’s okay to feel negative emotions, we should!
But we should not let negative thoughts drive our lives. And my way of looking at things is here like this: sometimes, life gets tough and it’s hard to keep a good and positive attitude towards what’s happening. This is the moment when we may have negative thoughts like “this isn’t fair, why is it happening to me?” or “What did I do wrong?”.
As you maybe remember Brooke Castillo’s famous coaching model:
Thoughts > Feelings > Actions > Results
Your thoughts create your feelings, your feelings create your actions and your actions the results that you have in your life.
So, if something hard’s happening in your life, you may have negative thoughts about it. If you’re following the model, you’ll then have the results in your life in consequence of these negative thoughts in the first place.
So, developing your ability to be more resilient will make you have maybe not positive but neutral thoughts considering what’s happening to you and then, you may have better results in your life 🙂
This is why being resilient is very important! Let me give you an example.
Imagine that you’re getting fired. This could be scenario one: you’re feeling very offended. You’re wondering why it’s happening to you and it literally stops you believing in having a career in this field, it’s hard to imagine that the situation can be better.
Let me just be more specific here and say that it’s 100% normal to feel like this a few days after the event occurs! It’s not an easy situation at all, so don’t think that I’m minimizing the effects of getting fired 🙂
Now, let’s just think that after a few days of being mad, you’re discovering that this could be the opportunity of working in another place and to start somewhere new, considering maybe that you always had a small idea of leaving this place anyway but you never thought how/when/what because you were a bit scared of the consequences of leaving this place.
Having resilience here will help you through this time that let’s face it, isn’t easy at all!
But you will see the good in this situation and you will be able to learn from it and to like I said, take the best out of it.
Since you are able to have control of this situation, you will develop new abilities!
For example, looking for a job efficiently, asking yourself what is it that you really want to do in your career, or even maybe, ask yourself what you really want to do with your life! These are questions that you may have never asked yourself if you wouldn’t have to get fired in the first place 🙂
How do you build resilience?
Actually, I remember being interested already a year ago about resilience and how to build it.
I discovered what the American Psychological Association shared and I wanted to share it with you too.
These are the 10 ways you can use to build a long lasting resilience! 🙂
My favorite is probably the “Keep things in perspective”. I always think that we should have a look at things by doing kind of an “unzoom” as I’m calling it: to try to reframe every situation and to look at it as we would give advice to our best friend. What would you tell your friend in this situation? This is an amazing way to reframe and have some perspective on a situation 🙂
How do you show resilience?
You show resilience by becoming stronger no matter what will come your way.
As I said it before, it’s REALLY okay to feel negative emotions in the first place.
You need to accept and acknowledge your negative emotions. They are here for a reason! They are a sign of what’s going on inside of you.
But after that, you can learn from the situation and seize the opportunity for a change. You CAN get something out of a very tough situation, as hard as it makes look at first.
Having a positive and learning attitude facing this challenge is how you’re going to show resilience!
What are the 7 C’s of resilience?
Ken Ginsburg is a pediatrician and adolescent specialist.
He describes the 7 Cs as ways to help kids and young adults to build resilience.
I think that it’s GENIUS and everyone (that has kids or not) can learn from the 7 Cs 🙂 it’s fascinating!

Resiliency and self-confidence
Of course, I need to talk about self-confidence and resilience 😉
It makes total sense that these 2 skills are very connected to each other 🙂
The moment you are becoming more and more resilient, you are trusting yourself. Because you know that no matter what, you’ll be okay! You will deal with anything that will come your way!
Knowing this will help you build your self-confidence. You will feel more comfortable being who you are because as I just said it, you can trust yourself, you can count on you! And you know that you’ll be okay!

Susan Tynan is the founder and CEO of Framebridge.
She built all of her business by HERSELF 🙂 and in an article in Forbes, she’s sharing the secret to her success:
Gross: What are the most important characteristics someone needs to have to be successful in your role?
Tynan: Resilience — hands down. There are incredible highs and lows, and they happen within a single day. When you’re doing something that hasn’t been done before, it’s not all going to go smoothly. The difference between succeeding and failing may be just in the speed you can dust off, regroup and start running again.
To sum up!
As you can see, resilience is simply an AMAZING SKILL.
No one was born with it! You can build this skill every day 🙂 and in a few days, months and years from now, you’ll see all the way you’re coming from and look at the day you started!
You cannot imagine how far it can take you 🙂
On the way, you’ll build your self-confidence so… What else can you ask for more?!
