It’s a system that once you know it, you’ll be on your way to do awesome things with your life!
Why is it important to finish what you start?
One of the most important things that is happening when you finish something, it’s not even the result that you get.
It’s the person you become when you committed to finishing it!
It’s who you become when you went through the process, facing obstacles and succeeding anyway!
When you finish what you start, you are proving to yourself that you are worth it.
That when you are committed, you are giving everything you have to succeed. No matter how hard it gets, you’re still there, still fighting and you know that you can do anything!
9 Steps to finish what you start
To finish what you start properly, you have to follow these 9 steps process:
1. Choose exactly what you want to do.
You have to know what task or what result you want to get.
Sometimes, we start many things at the same time and the solution is to really FOCUS on one and only one thing.
What task do you want to finish? What result do you want to get?
For example, you want to go walking for 30 minutes per day. Let’s keep this example through this explanation!
2. Think of the end goal. How do you want to feel? What do you want to achieve?
It’s essential to ask yourself what is your end goal with this task or this result that you want to achieve.
For the example of before, what will “walking 30 minutes per day” will make you feel? What result do you want to get?
Feel healthier? Feel in shape? What is really the end goal of going for 30 minutes walk every day?
Think about it clearly and keep it in mind.
3. Make a clear list of the exact actions you have to take to get there.
Just throw on the paper without overthinking it what are the actions that need to be taken for you to succeed at this task or getting the result that you want.
In the example that I gave, the exact actions could be:
- Get great shoes to go for walks.
- Decide on a time every day to walk these 30 minutes.
- Prepare/Download what you can do during these 30 minutes: Listen to a podcast episode, listen to a book…?
It doesn’t have to be a complete list, do not overthink it, simply write all that you can think of that will need to be done when it comes to executing the task.
4. Make a list of the obstacles you might encounter and what solutions to overcome those obstacles.
For example, when it comes to going for a 30-minute walk, you might feel lazy to go. This could be one obstacle. What will you do when you will feel lazy, that will make you go for a walk anyway?
This was really a goal that I wanted to reach: Going for a 30-minute walk. And I was feeling lazy indeed, so I’ve decided to download in advance personal development podcast episodes so I would be excited to go out!
This was my way to overcome the obstacle of not wanting to go out.
Using the same example, rain could be an obstacle.
The way to overcome that obstacle would be to prepare handy an umbrella that I like!
If you’re planning for obstacles, you will know what to do when you’re facing them! No surprises! 🙂
5. Picture yourself being there and already be that person!
No matter what action you’re doing, it’s because you think that it will make you feel a certain way.
By accomplishing this task, by finishing this thing that you absolutely want to finish, it’s because you’re going to feel a certain way.
No matter what you’re trying to achieve, already feel this way! The way that you want to feel!
And how do you do that?
By asking yourself first: How is it that you want to feel?
And then, what thoughts do you need to have, what do you need to believe, so you can feel this way?
By actually already feeling this way, you’re going to get there easier! You’re coming from a place of abundance and not from scarcity.
6. Add each action to your calendar.
Even if the list of all the actions that need to be taken isn’t exhaustive, add each element of this list in your calendar.
Decide when you’re going to do it in the next few days or weeks.
7. Be committed to doing the actions, even imperfectly.
No matter what, you have to be committed to what you decide for yourself.
If there is a last-minute change, make sure that you moved that action to another moment during the week.
There is a difference between people that just want something and people that are completely committed to something that they want.
Where do you stand? Do you just want to finish what you started? Be committed 100%!
And of course, no matter what action you’re taking, make sure that you’re ready to take imperfect action.
An action doesn’t need to be perfect to be successful!
8. Always, be gentle with yourself.
This rule is so important! Do not ever beat yourself up.
You are your own friend, your own coach.
Always be there for yourself, talk to yourself like you would talk to someone that you love!
If you don’t finish the action that needs to be finished, ask yourself: Why did it happen? What can you learn from this situation?
9. Be super determined to take action until you get what you want.
No matter what it is that you want, what thoughts do you need to believe to be determined to take every action that needs to be taken?
Know that nothing can stop you! You can do anything that you want.
Why don’t I complete what I start?
There are a few reasons why we don’t complete tasks that we start.
One of them is laziness. We know that it’s going to take some work, and we are just feeling like doing something else!
It totally makes sense. I’m the first one to feel this way! But the results that I want to get are bigger than the hard work that is asked at that moment.
Also, a lot of people don’t know what action to take because they don’t know “how” to do it.
I always say that we should not stop when we don’t know. We can always learn or correct what we’re doing!
The most important is to always take action even if we’re not sure of what we’re doing!
It’s like the sentence that says “I have no idea what I’m doing but I’m doing it anyway!”, it makes so much sense! 🙂
How do I complete any task?
You can go through the steps that I described in the list above.
One of the most important steps is really to list the exact actions that need to be taken and then, absolutely add them to your calendar.
And if you have a last-minute cancellation, to move them to a time that you’re going to do them, no matter what.
This is the key to complete any tasks that you want.
How do I get motivated to do tasks?
I think that one of the questions that can motivate you to do the task is to be aware of what you’re trying to achieve by finishing this task.
- What are you going to achieve?
- How are you going to feel?
- What is that end goal?
Thinking about your “why” behind that action, that task that you need to finish can help you be motivated.
Do not forget that your thoughts create your feelings that drive your actions and that get you the results that you have in your life.
Here, you need to know what actions you want to drive? And for that actions, what feelings do you need to have?
This can give you a great frame of motivation to get that task to be done!
Why finishing what you started is related to building your confidence?
When you are finishing what you started, you are showing yourself that you can do it.
That you can be committed and determined to finish that task. That it’s worth your time and your effort.
You’ll show yourself that you can count on yourself, that you can be a great friend.
This at first, will help in improving your self-esteem.
Then, it will help you boost your self-confidence because even if you don’t know exactly how to do it, you’re going to discover that it isn’t an excuse not to take the next action.
And that you don’t need to know exactly how to do something for an action to be taken.
You can count on yourself and trust yourself! You have your own back! 🙂
To sum up!
As you can see, finishing what you start is a skill that you can develop.
With the 9 steps process, you can learn practically how to do it and then, get any results that you want in your life!
It’s not always going to be easy, but soon you’ll master the skill of taking action even when it’s imperfect action.
You just have to believe the right thoughts that make you take the next action!
