What words?
Most of the time, we don’t pay attention to this!
But the words that we are using when we’re talking or thinking are soooo important!
Think about it for a minute.
Thinking for example “I have sooo much on my plate”, we think that we are reporting the news, that those are facts!
But actually, this is just a story you’re telling yourself, you choose this one but you could also choose something such as “I’m doing many things these days!”.
Remember that when it comes to the choice of words you’re using, it all depends on how they make you feel, then you realize if it’s serving you or not to choose these ones!
It’s really about all of that drama that you’re creating for yourself… And it’s really not serving you!
I can definitely find myself saying things such as:
- I have so much to do it’s crazy!
- I am so busy, it’s terrible!
- This task is going to be a nightmare…
But that’s okay!
Let’s see what you can do about it…
What to do about it…
The very first step here is to become more observant.
When you’re done reading/listening here, just start by paying attention to the thoughts you’re thinking, to what you’re saying, from a place of compassion and curiosity!
Don’t beat yourself up if you see that you could use a different kind of vocabulary when talking to yourself.
Just start by being more aware, it can even be funny, if you choose to go that road! 😉
The words “everyone, everything, should, ever, never…”
There are a few words that are interesting to think of when we’re talking and thinking…
The words such as:
- Everybody
- Everything
- Never
- Always
We tend to make generalities out of specific situations or specific cases!!
Is it really ALWAYS the case? Is it really EVERYBODY that does that? That thinks that?
I love to just question if that’s real or that’s simply real in our head!
This is where you can find yourself thinking this…
- Everybody’s doing it… Really? ALL the people on the planet?
- Making money is everything… Really? Is it everything there is?!
- I can never do something like this! Never…? As you could sign today for NEVER doing it 1000% sure? 😉
- I’ll always be late, that’s just me! As you probably know, I don’t really believe that there is a way we’re supposed to be or not… You can choose who you want to be every single day of your life!
The power of the words you’re using!
I actually already talked about it and it’s called the vocabulary you are using but today I wanted to talk not about the vocabulary but really about the power of the words you use.
And from the moment that you become more aware of it, it may change so much for you really!
I think that from the moment that I started paying attention to the words that I was using, a lot of things changed, including the fact that I saw the words other people were using!
This is not a problem but it’s interesting to look at and to be more aware of!
Our thoughts…
You know how I say that our thoughts are not necessarily real, they are just our interpretation of facts, of things that happen around us.
Those thoughts, thinking them, makes us feel a certain way.
And when you think about it, those thoughts are just made of words! Words next to each other!
So, it could be interesting to pay attention to what we are actually thinking and what words are we thinking and then, saying!
Being more aware!
So the very first step as I always say is to be more aware, to pay more attention and it’s always coming from a place of compassion and curiosity.
It’s not coming from a place of “I have to get fixed” or “I have to fix this!”, it’s really coming from a place of compassion and curiosity and this is very important! I would say, essential even!
What words?
So, you may wonder when I’m saying “the words you’re using”, you may wonder what words I am talking about!
So, here are a few examples of what I realized that I said and what I hear from my friends and surrounding too!
- “This task that I’m about to do is absolutely horrible!”
- “My day is going so bad, there’s nothing good that can happen…”
- “I am so stupid, I cannot believe I did this!”
- “I am so stupid, I cannot believe I said that!”
- “It really feels like dying…”
- “This is torture!”
- “I absolutely hate that person, I just wish him to die!”
I know that out of context, this sounds very extreme but here’s what we’re doing: We are trying to pay attention to what we’re doing, what we’re thinking, how we are feeling in the moments we are not in, so we can have more objectivity!
Look at it from a place of compassion and curiosity because let’s face it, when you think “I absolutely hate that person”, in the moment you’re saying it, it would be hard to look at it from a place of compassion and curiosity, because in those moments, we’re high on emotions!
They have a weight!
There is for sure a difference between seeing the task that I’m about to do as “absolutely horrible to do” and I simply pay attention to the fact that my brain does not want to do this task!
It just wants to relax!
But the fact is that there is a task that needs to be done but what you are thinking about it and the words you’re using to choose to talk about this task actually make the whole difference!
So, really, I want you to understand here that there’s nothing that has to change!
You don’t have to use different words if you don’t want to, you don’t have to do anything about it but just pay attention and raise awareness around the words you use because I do believe that the words we used to express ourselves make us feel a certain way!! Definitely!
2 steps!
So step one is to simply be attentive to the words you’re using when you’re talking on a daily basis of course you don’t have to do this for every word that comes out of your mouth every single day but try simply to pay attention sometimes!
And you can also pay attention to other people’s words!
You’ll start noticing and then discover so much suffering for the people around you just because of the words they’re using!
Step number two is to look at it from a place of compassion and curiosity!
Ask yourself: “I wonder why I’m choosing to say this word and actually, how do they make me feel? When I’m doing a task I don’t really want to do and I say “this is going to be horrible”, how does that make me feel?!
Here for step number 3, I actually believe that there’s nothing that you have to do!
I know that as a coach, of course, we like to question what we’re thinking, deciding to think something else instead intentionally!
But here, for today, I’m telling you just by doing steps one and two, so, being aware and looking at it with compassion and curiosity and wondering how saying these words make you feel is enough for today!
Just by doing this, you will already see how much you create your reality not only buy the thoughts you are thinking but also by the words you’re saying!! In your head and out of it!!
It’s about feeling genuinely better!
So for today, I just want you to have a look at this!
To do step one and step two and to just see how you’re feeling after that because let me tell you something…
I’m helping a lot my clients in coaching, to reach for goals and to accomplish things, it’s like a high-level sports person, you know! You need a coach to help you get to the next level!
So, I also think that deep down, life coaching is to help you feel better deeply and genuinely!
I like the idea of taking your life from good to great and just by being more aware on understanding the impact of the words you’re using, you’re going to feel better!
And this will change your day which obviously will change your weeks, your months and why not your whole life! 🙂
How it’s related to building your self-confidence…
When you start by paying attention to the way you’re talking to yourself, you’ll realize the words you’re using and what you’re saying…
And you’re going to realize that you wouldn’t talk to a friend like this?!
So, by catching what words you’re using, you can start by being more aware (which this, is already a way to build confidence because you have control over the way you think so over your life! You don’t feel a victim anymore!) and after being aware of what words you’re using, you can choose different words!!
What do you think about that? 🙂
