What a title, right?
I could talk about everything and nothing with a title like this one!
But today I want to talk about something that is sooo underrated in my opinion and that could get much more attention to help you feel much better!!
Let me give you more details so you understand also how it’s related to feeling more confident…!
It seems underrated…
I’m talking about breathing!
It’s really THE THING that we’re doing without paying much attention, we almost take it for granted (almost?), no matter if we are sad or happy, hungry or full, we are breathing!
I know you came for this very special information, right?
But hear me out and pay attention…
This is not just an episode to tell you to breathe.
I want you to understand the impact it has in all the situations of your life.
I’m going to get into this a bit after but I really want you to be open-minded to hearing more about breathing and the impact it will have on your level of self-esteem and confidence.
Why is it so useful?
In many situations, paying attention to the way you’re breathing is going to help you feel more in control of the situation.
And I can see from what my clients are telling me, often, we feel out of control.
In our reactions, our behaviors, things we say, we then regret what we’ve done or said and we may even say that “it wasn’t really us!”.
So… Why not feel more in control? Why not make that part of our life easier?
We cannot control always the circumstances.
But we can ALWAYS choose the way we want to BE in those circumstances, the PERSON we want to be at that moment.
Let me give you more examples!
In what situation is it that useful?
In my own experience and the work we do with my clients, I can see a few situations in which paying attention to the way we breathe IS 100% making a difference.
1. In a stressful moment
Imagine a situation recently in which you felt any uncomfortable emotion such as stress, restlessness, or nervosity.
Imagine taking deep breaths, inhaling, and exhaling.
Just a few of them, 3-4.
How differently would you live that moment?
Think about it before being in that moment, make the decision ahead of time of taking deep breaths and think again about the impact that it would have!
2. In feeling overhwelmed
I know that many of my clients tell me that “there’s so much I want to do!”
What is most of the time, happening when we feel overwhelmed…?
We end up doing nothing!
So, the whole thing here is to take deep breaths so we allow the emotion of overwhelm (let’s not forget that an emotion is created by what we are THINKING) so, in that moment, when we feel overwhelmed, the amazing thing to do is to take a deep breath and to remind ourselves that we feel this way because of something we are THINKING, not because of all the things we think we have to do!
Breathing is soooo useful because it helps us take control back of the situation!
3. In a discussion/conflict/fight
Soooo important to learn to breathe in those situations…!
We often regret afterward having said something and say that it was not us!
Taking a deep breath is helping us again, taking control over the situation, not letting us react to every emotion we may be feeling (anger, frustration…) but really calming us down a bit and being more objective in this situation.
In moments of conflict, I like to remind myself that it’s important to listen to the other one (or others) from a place of trying to understand and not only to reply!
4. Feeling insecure, fragile, self-doubt
Soooo important in those moments!
As your confident coach, I had to! 😉
When you see your brain offering you thoughts such as:
“I’m not good enough”
“What I do is not good enough”
“I’m not sure I’m being loved”
Just remember that it’s just a THOUGHT! It’s a few words next to each other!
And you cannot have that much awareness if you don’t take the time to pause and to BREATHE!
So, next time you see a sentence like this, breathe, and take control over the situation by reminding yourself that it’s just YOUR BRAIN!
