Let me show you what to do when you know that this is what’s stopping you!
Let’s not wait more (and wait for it to be perfect!) to get started, let’s do this!!
It makes total sense!
Why are we obsessed with getting things THE BEST that we can, I mean, the most PERFECT that we can when we’re doing something?!
I think it’s for 2 reasons!
The first one is that if we make it perfect, we can tell ourselves that we’re not likely going to fail!
Because we’re afraid of failing. At school, it was best NOT to make mistakes, so… We better not fail as adults too!
We really want to succeed… No matter what we’re trying to do!
It actually TOTALLY makes sense when you think about it!!
So, let’s first acknowledge that tendency of wanting to make it perfect so we can prevent ourselves from failing and put more chances on our side that we WILL succeed!!
The second reason is that making sure everything is perfect is a familiar stage.
It’s something that our brain knows how to take us there (by offering us “perfectionism” thoughts!) and what is familiar is by definition more comfortable than the unfamiliar which is uncomfortable.
So, the fact that we want things to be perfect is often stopping us from even trying or taking a small step!
Which is keeping us FOR SURE safe from actually getting what we want, wherever we want to go!
So… This second reason is not about the thing itself that we try to get perfect but it simply prevents us from taking any action towards that thing!
Soooo interesting right?!
Be aware, 101!
So, as often in personal development, simply BE AWARE that you’re having thoughts of wanting to do something “perfectly” such as “it’s not good enough yet”, “why bother trying, it’s never going to be perfect” or “I’m not sure it’s worth my time”.
The very first step is to simply OBSERVE these thoughts.
You don’t know what you don’t know as I always say!!
Just observe them and look at these thoughts pass like clouds in the sky…
You do not have to believe them, you can just THINK them which is very different!!
Find 1 single proof of the past!
Something that is always VERY USEFUL is to find useful proof in the past.
So now, I want you to think of 1 or 2 situations in which what you did was totally ENOUGH.
It could have been studying for an exam (of course, do not take the example of the exam that you did not succeed!), think of situations in which what you did has been ENOUGH.
What you want to do with this is to find proof and tell your brain that what you did, did not have to be PERFECT to be good enough.
VERY often, as we saw before, perfectionism is actually stopping us from taking action EVEN BEFORE we even started doing something/taking that small next step…!
So… What have you done, what action you took that wasn’t perfect but totally did the job?
It could be tasks at your job, a presentation, the organization of a party/birthday, do not break your head to find difficult examples!
Just think of situations where you did something and it was totally enough (and maybe even more than just enough!!).
And just see how what is and always has been limiting you was these thoughts in your head that were telling you that to make what you’re trying to do AND YOURSELF be worthy, it had to be perfect.
So… No more for you!!
Now you have useful proof of your past that showed you the opposite!!
