Comparing yourself may have happened to you!!
If it did not until today, you’re a lucky one! 😉
It’s totally fair!! It can also happen offline…!
The solution is the same! 🙂
Let me show you what it is…!
Remember your brothers and sisters!
We tend to forget because so many inventions and changes have happened but… Our brain has so much in common with our brothers and sisters who used to actually survive in the caves!!
So, this primitive part of our brain is the exact same!!
To survive in the past, we HAD to be a part of the tribe… Being alone meant literally death!!
I truly believe that this is the origin of our “comparison tendencies”!
There’s nothing more to it than just this primitive part of our brain that wants to make sure we are a part of the tribe, that we are loved and accepted by them!
This is why we compare: to make sure we fit, that we won’t be left all alone (= dying in the past!).
I guess you got my point so… Let’s continue! 😉
What to do in 3 steps!
So, the first step we talked about it: Just remember that your brain wants to survive, not thrive!
So, it’s offering thoughts of comparison because it wants to make sure you are going to survive thanks to being a part of your tribe.
You’re totally normal! Nothing’s wrong with you! You have a perfectly healthy brain!! How amazing is that!!
The second step is to simply expect these thoughts to pop up.
I used to think that I could help people “stop comparing themselves to others” but because of what I just talked about, I don’t think we can eliminate this primitive part of our brain but WE CAN totally let these thoughts pass like a train or clouds in the sky!
So, second step is expecting these thoughts to show up and not making them mean anything. It’s just your primitive brain, nothing has gone wrong!
The last step that I find absolutely AMAZING is a complete change of paradigm!!
It’s to USE comparing yourself as a GOOD THING, as an inspiration!!
What a way to turn things upside down right? 🙂
Ask yourself:
- What is this person modeling for me?
- What are they showing up is possible for any human being? (You probably are one so… You’re not an exception!!)
- What are they an example of?
- How did they manage to do this/get there and what is my next step?
On social media but also in real life!
These 3 steps can be used not only on social media but also in real life!!
Whenever your brain is offering you these thoughts, simply follow the 3 steps process when you’re scrolling on your phone or “scrolling” in life! 😉
It simply WORKS!
Try it and let me know! 😉
In summary…
As you can see, nothing has gone wrong with comparing yourself to others.
It comes down to the idea that it’s never WHAT we are thinking (comparing ourselves in this case) but WHAT we make it mean!! (Maybe “They are better than me” or “I’m different…”).
You can choose intentionally to make it mean anything that YOU want!!
Decide to model what they did, what they felt, what they thought!
I’m a fan of the saying “someone stood exactly facing the same problem that I’m facing today and they found a way to make it work!” SO EMPOWERING, right?!
