Such an interesting title you might say!
Let’s have a look at what I mean by “amnesia scenario” and how it can help you build your confidence…!
But first… Disclosure!
The very first thing to say is… Of course, I don’t pretend that amnesia is fun or that it’s something to consider very lately.
My aim is really not to be unconsidered to people that suffer from that disease or to their families.
I just wanted to use the idea of starting completely from scratch, not having thoughts about the past, and using them against us!
Let me explain a bit more what I mean by that but it was important for me to say that of course, I don’t diminish amnesia, its symptoms, or effects in any way.
The stories of our past we keep on telling ourselves…
I came up with that idea because, in one of my coaching sessions with a client, we talked a lot about the stories she was telling herself about the reason why she cannot make different choices in her life.
And she was (just like we all do!) using her past against herself saying things such as:
- “I’ve always been like this, not being comfortable making a decision…”
- “I’m not usually making a decision until I don’t have a choice anymore!”
- “If I did not succeed until now, it means something about me…”
And we are all doing this!
Using our past/what we did/said to explain who we are today and even worse, who we are going to be!
As I always say, our brain is telling us stories all the time, there’s nothing wrong with that if it’s serving us!
But as we can see with this example, when it comes to making a decision for example and we think thoughts such as:
- “I’ve always been like this, not being comfortable making a decision…”
- “I’m not usually making a decision until I don’t have a choice anymore!”
- “If I did not succeed until now, it means something about me…”
It’s not too empowering, we feel like we are even less skilled than ever to make a decision!!
But it’s more because of what we are telling ourselves!
It’s funny because as I’m doing in every coaching session that I’m doing, I’m helping people see what’s going on in their brain and most importantly, not believe that it’s true!
I was really believing (and still do!) that this client is amazing at making decisions!
She did not agree! Who’s right and who’s wrong actually?
The idea of amnesia!
What is interesting is that if there is something we want to do or change in our life, just imagine if we wouldn’t have those stories we are telling ourselves!
For example, this client wanted to change jobs and completely move to another career.
But she kept on thinking:
- “I’ve always been like this, not being comfortable making a decision…”
- “I’m not usually making a decision until I don’t have a choice anymore!”
- “If I did not succeed until now, it means something about me…”
I shared with her the idea of having amnesia, waking up without knowing anything about her past!
With this blank slate, how would she think about changing jobs and moving to another career?
If she had no other stories her brain was (safely) offering her?
It took her a bit of time and she came up with a few creative ways:
- Brainstorming ideas of what she wanted to do instead
- Make a few phone calls to people she knows
- Decided that she can make a decision and make another one in case!
We talked a lot about this and realized that sometimes, the stories we are telling ourselves about our past can be helpful!
For example, when I started my coaching business, I used stories that I was successful in the past with another business to prove to myself that I could also be successful with this business helping people!
So, it all depends if those stories are supporting us or not!
Question yourself…
So, the only thing to do here is to be on to yourself.
Don’t forget that our brain is wired for survival!
So, it will always offer you thoughts to keep you in the cage, and save energy!
So, it’s important to remind yourself that no matter what you want to do, your primitive brain will try to save you from any pain!
Here, the only thing to do is to be aware that what you are thinking are just thoughts in your head.
You are NOT your thoughts! You are not what you are thinking.
You don’t have to believe everything you think. You can choose what you want to believe!
And how do you that? By:
1. Being aware of what you think, the stories your brain is telling you (“I’ve always been like this, not being comfortable making a decision…”) and decide if you want to continue to believe that it’s true!
2. Question its veracity! Is it really true?
3. Try the amnesia scenario! What if you would not have any stories about that, what would you do differently?
Just to share one last example: I wanted to start learning ASL a few months ago.
And I kept on having the stories “you never continue learning a language when you start learning it” and I was on to myself!
I saw that it was just my brain trying to keep me safe and if I would have amnesia, I would just start right now!
So, think about something you want to do.
What if you would have amnesia, waking up without all that stories that are stopping you, how would you proceed differently with that one thing you would like to do?

To sum up!
As you can see, we sometimes have stories that are supporting us and we absolutely should keep them!
If you think “I’ve done this before, I can do it, it’s aaaaall good!” then keep it!
But if the story your brain is offering you doesn’t make you feel good, question its veracity!
And try the amnesia scenario! What if you would have absolutely 0 stories about that thing you want to do/try/improve?
How different would you show up? What would be different?
Amaaaazing idea no? 😉
