Do you want to hear more of my accent?! Discover all episodes here!! 🙂
I hear myself and people saying sentences that start with the words “I have to!”
Or… “I don’t have the choice!”.
Of course, it inspired me to create a podcast, an episode, so let me show you how this is interesting and the impact it can actually have on your life!
You’re saying it!
I know you are! I am too!
We are humans!
And this is what we can hear/say:
- I have to work!
- I have to cook for my kids!
- I have to go to the gym!
- I have to do that thing!
When you look at this like this, you see that the person talking does not have any choice!
It looks like they absolutely have to do that thing, that they don’t have the choice!
And the problem here is the motivational triad!
You remember it? It’s that our brain is wired for survival and it does not want us to spend energy!
It wants us to SAVE energy!
So, here’s the thing!
If you’re telling your brain that you HAVE TO do something, your brain will rebel against what it is you “have to do” and it will come up with 1000 other things to do that will bring you more pleasure and more safety at that moment! 🙂
What is actually happening…
What is actually happening is that not only the task may be annoying to do (dishes anyone?), but we also really don’t feel like doing it!
So, we are suffering before, during, and maybe after even!!
So, here, I want you to pay attention to when you’re going to say next time “I have to do this” like you’re adding another layer of suffering, really, when you think about it! 🙂
You always have a choice!
I want you to consider something different today.
You actually always have the choice!
Let me say it again: You actually always have the choice!
Because when you think about it, really deep down, you do not need to have a job!
You don’t have to feed your kids!
You don’t have to do the task, you don’t have to go to the gym!
Never! 🙂
It’s always a choice you’re making consciously or unconsciously.
And I know that people will tell me “No, I cannot let my kids not be fed!” or “I have to work, I have to have the money to pay my bills!”
But actually, it’s not exactly true!
Some people are choosing not to work or choose not to feed the kids…!
And of course, it’s not the situation that I would wish for somebody if it’s not what they want but what I’m trying to say here is really, for you to pay attention to what you’re saying that reflects probably what you are thinking!
This means when you say “I have to work”, I’m wondering how you’re going to work when you think “I have to”!
Simply pay attention!
What I’m offering you here is to try something else!
Imagine instead of saying “I have to”, you would say “I choose to”.
How would that be different?
And it goes like this:
- I choose to go to work!
- I choose to cook for my kids!
- I choose to go to the gym!
- I choose to do the task that sounds annoying!
If you take the example of going to the gym, imagine two people that are going to the gym, this is a fact.
One thinks “I have to go to the gym” and the other one thinks “I choose to go to the gym”, what difference does that make in your opinion?
How differently may these two people feel and different may they show up at the gym?
Interesting, right!!
