I’m creating a tone of suspense I know, but at least I know how not to be annoying by keeping it secret until the end of the post/episode…!
I’m talking about the past here!
Why is the past a problem?
I think that looking at the past and thinking about sweet memories and moments is an amazing thing!
It all depends on how you’re feeling when you’re doing it!
So, this will be the big thing to take away today: When you think about the past, how do you feel?
As I said, I like thinking of fun moments and other amazing memories, I feel really great when I’m doing it!
But there is one thing that I recommend NOT doing and that is of course also related of looking at the past…
Using the past against yourself!
Often and of course, it is related to building your self-confidence, we look at the past and we feel BAD.
We use it to think thoughts that make us feel regret such as “I should have done that differently” or we may feel hopelessness from thinking “I’ve never been consistent with this habit so, why bother?”.
As you can see, there are no upsides to thinking these thoughts!!
They are causing us so much pain!!
Stay out of it!!
So, this is the diagnostic for today: Always check how you’re feeling.
Look at how you are FEELING.
If you feel GOOD thinking about the past, why not?!
But if you feel BAD, ask yourself: What am I thinking about the past? What is the thought that I think makes me feel a NEGATIVE/UNCOMFORTABLE emotion?
Of course!! There’s never a problem with feeling negative/uncomfortable emotions!
But always keep in mind that it’s a CHOICE that you’re making, based on what you are thinking.
So, all of it goes a bit with the idea that “If you can learn from the past and enjoy from it, DO THINK about it, but if you don’t feel good thinking about it, stay out of it and redirect your brain to think other thoughts!” 🙂
When to stay out of it?
These are some very tricky thoughts that make us feel BAD thinking about the past:
- I should have said something different.
- I’ve never been good at this, I’ll never will.
- Nobody appreciates me.
- I’ve always been so alone.
- This is impossible to do for me.
As you can see, all of these statements are based on our view over the PAST, it’s our view of our PAST SELF!
What do you think, thinking these sentences will create in the future?
It will repeat it!!
Because let’s not forget that what we think we become, our thoughts generate emotions that drive our actions!!
So… What do you do today when you think “Nobody appreciates me”, you find more proof and create more proof of nobody appreciating you!!
So, when you see a thought popping up in your brain that is based on the PAST, your PAST SELF, if you don’t feel good thinking it, catch this thought, don’t believe it, and remind yourself “ahhh I’ve been thinking and believing this thought!”, it’s not necessarily true! How do I feel? Not too good? I’d better stay out of the past!!”
So, always check how you’re feeling.
If you’re not learning from the past to do something different in the future, it’s not worth looking at it for you and you’d better STAY OUT OF IT! 🙂
