1 + 10 ways to declutter your brain!
I actually share in this article ONE incredible way to declutter your mind and then, if you want to dig deeper into that topic, feel free to go through the 10 other ways…
The one way to declutter your brain…
I learned this from various self-help books and Brooke Castillo named it “a thought download”.
For 5-10 minutes, every day, simply sit and “empty what’s in your brain”!
Take a paper and pen and write down the thoughts that you have in your head.
Just write without correcting or paying attention to mistakes.
If you don’t know what to write, you can ask yourself:
- How am I feeling today?
- What am I happy about?
- What is annoying me?
- What is frustrating?
- What am I looking forward to?
It’s like decluttering your closet!
You first need to take everything out, so you can then see what is serving you and what is not serving you anymore.
You do the exact same with your thoughts!
When you do a “thought download”, you put all of your thoughts on the paper and then, you can look at them with compassion and curiosity and ask yourself:
- Does this thought serve me?
You are not your thoughts!
You can choose what thoughts to think and to believe just like you choose your thoughts in the morning! 🙂
By writing your thoughts like this on the paper, it’s going to help you so much having distance from what’s going on inside of your head.
You won’t feel overwhelmed, you will have clarity over the way you’re feeling and what you can look at it with compassion and curiosity!
How to declutter your mind, 10 more ways to do so!
1. Make Your Workspace and Home Tidy
Physical clutter will always hint to the brain that there is something extra that needs to be done.
For instance, you get to the house after work; the only thing in your mind is rest.
Then, even before you set foot in your home, you meet all manner of stuff that is out of place.
Won’t your mind shift from a deserving nap to an unwarranted thought of tidying thighs up?
Always ensure your working space, and your home is neat and desirable. An organized place gives so much peace of mind you will never notice.
2. Ensure You Get Adequate Sleep
Most of us tend to undermine the importance of sleep.
We take the matter of adequate sleep so casually that we fail to realize the devastating effects it could have on our mental health.
Enough sleep is not only good for our physical growth but also our mental stability. Enough sleep has many benefits, more than we can imagine.
3. Write Down Your Thoughts On Paper
What do you do if your kitchen space is all filled up?
Do you shift to the bedroom to cook there? I guess not.
The best option would be to free up some space and continue with your baking and frying.
That is precisely what you need to do with your mind.
Find somewhere to write down the endless thoughts and ideas. By writing them down, you relieve yourself of the tedious work of having to remember them.
4. Unchain Yourself From The Past
One of the surest and proven ways to unclutter your mind is by forgetting the past.
You just need to let go of everything that might have derailed your journey in the past.
Mind clutter, most of the time, is related to the past. Most of us have those large cabinets of mental drawers stuck at the back of our minds.
The drawers are all filled with missed opportunities, our debts, broken relationships, and so on.
5. Set Priorities
Let’s all admit it. We can’t do everything by ourselves.
Yes, there are things you would want to do, but you realize you can only get to a specific limit.
The only healthy thing to do is to admit you can’t do everything.
Instead, list down your priorities and work on them in order of their emergencies.
6. Dare Any Negativity Coming Your Way
Sometimes we all feel disappointed and weak. It is normal.
However, if we start engaging in some toxic self-talk, then we end up losing ourselves in depression. Self-negative talk magnifies our problems and limits our potential.
It is essential to be aware of the kind of thought you allow to run through your mind. Don’t allow victimizing thoughts to walk in and find a space in your mind.
That could be catastrophic.
7. Regulate Your Online Presence
Social Media is awash with all manner of information.
It is the platform where people are showing off their latest makeup and state-of-the-art bungalows. If you are not mentally stable, you could end up sinking into depression.
A study shows that social media could affect your mental health by increasing depression and loneliness.
8. Try not to Procrastinate
The more you postpone your activities, the more you have a workload to deal with.
Consequently, your mind becomes overwhelmed by all the decisions you have had to put off.
Life is a series of activities and choices each day. Ensure you tackle each of them just as they come. It is the best way to declutter your brain.
9. Maybe, It Is Time You Stopped Multitasking
If you get to your office and find out that it is in a mess, where do you start the cleaning?
Do you begin with the tables or the floor? Or would you handle them at the same time?
Well, you know too well that multitasking, even for drivers, doesn’t end up well. The best thing to do is to identify an area of emergency and start from there.
Do not have so much in your hands when you can do one time, without much stress.
10. Share Your Feelings With A Loved One
What do you do if you have luggage and can’t carry it by yourself?
You will seek for help. It is the same way with mental clutter. If you feel mentally weighed down, the best you can do is to open up.
Share your burdens with someone close to you. There is some therapeutic feeling in letting somebody know your challenges. Just sharing with them is enough. It will already help you to know how to relax your mind.
What do you need help with?
