A great coaching question
This is a question that I absolutely love asking.
Where do you see yourself in a year from now? In 5 years from now? In 10 years from now?
Sometimes, we are getting stuck in knowing what our next action is, we feel overwhelmed with the decisions or choices we need to make…
So this is a great question to ask yourself!
Where do you see yourself 365 from now?
What would you have accomplished?
Who are your friends?
What job/activity are you doing?
How are you feeling in general?
The brain has no time
I love talking about that topic!
You know when you’re listening to some music and you’re getting emotional thinking of a moment or of someone…
This is amazing!! I like to call it “the brain has no time” and it’s true!
You don’t need to be in a moment to feel all the feelings that go with that moment!
If you’re going to visit Paris soon and you’re getting excited, chances are you are even more excited now than when you’ll get there…!
And why does it work this way?!
Your thoughts create your feelings!
This is the reason why.
It is what you are saying to yourself that creates the feelings you’re going to have! 🙂
And this is something amazing!
At first, it can be overwhelming because when you realize this, you understand that you have way more power over your life than you ever thought you had.
Let me explain!
You know when you’re feeling disappointed? Or when you’re feeling offended? Small examples just to show you that you’re feeling this way because of the thoughts you just had! 🙂
The great news here are that you don’t NEED to feel this way, you can choose how to feel by choosing what thoughts to have.
All of this should make us question all the thoughts we are having all the time!
I remember reading somewhere “don’t believe anything you think!” and it makes total sense! 🙂
Also, we could ask ourselves if all the thoughts (such as beliefs!) that we heard since our childhood are necessarily right and legitimate…!
Anyway, why am I telling you this?

Using the Self-Coaching Model to create the results that you want!
If you ask yourself the question “where do I see myself in a year from now?”, in your answers, you might find some specific results.
For example, you want to get stronger or you want to feel healthier or you want to work somewhere else or have a different position at your job.
So the first step is knowing what you want, it’s answering the question “where do I see myself in a year from now?”.
Then, the next step is about knowing the Self-Coaching Model that I love so much:
Your Thoughts create your feelings that drive your actions that will get you the results that you want in your life.
Knowing the results, you can go backward and think of the actions you need to take, the feelings you want to feel and then (essential part!), what thoughts you need to have to start this whole process! 🙂
The example of getting strong…
An example is always a great idea! 🙂
Let’s imagine that you want to get stronger…
This is the result that you really want, a year from now.
The first thing that you need to ask yourself is no matter what result you want, ask yourself WHY you want it.
In this example, what does getting stronger look like? When you will get stronger, how are you going to feel? What is good about being stronger? What can it bring to your life?
For this to happen, you may take actions such as:
- Doing some exercises at home a few days a week
- Going to a class with someone explaining you the right away to get stronger
- Doing some exercises with a friend once a week in the park
As you can see, all of those are actions that WILL get you the result that you want which is, getting stronger.
To help you take action, what feelings will you need to feel to take those actions?
Maybe you need to feel…
- any other feeling?
Let’s consider that when you feel these feelings, you’re ready to take action!
To feel this way, what thoughts do you may have?
“I’m able to build strength”.
“One step at a time, I’ll get stronger”.
“Being strong is something that makes me feel good”.
As you can see, I couldn’t find great thoughts because it isn’t really authentic, as this isn’t a result I’m trying to get.
But you got the idea right? 🙂
You can already feel like you got the result that you want!
The amazing thing here is that actually when you think about it, you don’t NEED to be stronger to already feel this way!
You can start feeling it right away!
We all think that we need to get something in our life to feel a certain way.
And this is what Brooke Castillo is amazing at explaining to us.
She’s saying that it never gets better than now! 🙂
She’s been coaching soooo many people that truly think that when they will get to a certain place in their life, they will feel a certain way. But it’s not true! 🙂
Happiness isn’t on the other side, you won’t feel better once you get this!
For the example of getting stronger, you can really already FEEL stronger even if you’re not already strong as much as you want to be! 🙂
This is what we talked about Nadalie and I when we said that you can feel like reaching your goals even before completely getting to the destination! 🙂
Already feeling this way will help you overcome any obstacles…
What is great about already having the feelings is that you will overcome any obstacles faster than if you felt another way.
Imagine you’re telling yourself “It will take me so much time to get stronger”, you might have feelings such as feeling defeated, unmotivated, insecure… And those feelings won’t help you take the right actions (going out to exercise, etc.!)
Does that make sense?
As you can see, having the right feelings will already make you feel like you GOT there (and you don’t even need to actually get there to feel this way!) AND it will help you in taking action because you will have the right thoughts and the right feelings to take the right actions! 🙂
The aim of life is to feel…
I truly believe that every human being on this planet lives because of what they really want to feel.
I could write and record another podcast episode about this topic, but I just wanted here to be super specific on this.
So, no matter what goal you set for yourself or what result you want in your life, keep in mind what you’re going to FEEL once you’ll have it.
And then, understand that you don’t actually need to get there to already feel this way!
I like also to talk about feeling healthier. This is definitely one of the results that I want for a year from now.
And I actually already feel healthier even if I didn’t reach (weight and strength talking!) exactly what I wanted.
You need to understand what you want to FEEL! 🙂
To sum up!
So, this is what I wanted to share with you today.
You don’t need to get a certain result to already feel this way!
I know that some people will ask me “So why should I try to get a certain result if I can already feel this way?”. Because if you want to be healthier, it will be hard in the long run to have the feelings of being healthy if you’re absolutely NOT healthy! 🙂
So, think of a result that you really want in your life and start feeling like you got there!
I’m telling you, you won’t be disappointed.
